Engram
An engram is any fully self-contained program for soulfire manipulation, typically encoded within flamescript to produce a complex effect like state manipulation, chemical processing, or computation. Notably, this also includes memories, thoughts, and sensory records; anything that could constitute cognitive activity.
Engrams need not be intentionally constructed. After all, long term memory is (typically) an unintentional engram. Generally speaking, any action performed frequently enough becomes embedded as an engram in the core, commonly referred to as muscle memory.
Definitional
Engrams utilized in memory and soulplane projection, which directly store information. The main function of such engrams is to reproduce a given soulfire state when utilized, which is tantamount to reproducing information.
Such engrams are also often used as computational memory in phlogistic computing, and as a replacement for short-term memory in advanced phantasms.
Computational
Engrams which meaningfully transform soulfire, often following a predetermined algorithm, for the purposes of information processing. Such engrams are the foundation of phlogistic computing, responsible for performing the role of logical processing in reckoning.
Dynamical
Engrams which center around infusing soulfire for use in force generation or direct bombardment, either within the body or the outside world. For example, a common achievement for apprentice soulkeepers is the development of an engram for direct [[coupling]]-based control of their own body, often attained by chemically paralyzing their muscles and attempting to navigate.
Most engrams employed in active combat are dynamical, as they are often the simplest to utilize and offer direct methods of attack.
